What is numerology?

What the practice actually claims, where it came from, and how to use it honestly.

Numerology reads patterns in two facts about you: your date of birth and the letters of your name. Each letter maps to a number, multi-digit totals are reduced by adding their digits, and the resulting set of numbers is read as a portrait of temperament, talent and timing. That is the whole machine. Everything else is interpretation.

It is worth being clear about what the practice claims. Serious numerology describes potentials and tendencies, not events. It is closer to a personality framework with an old philosophical pedigree than to fortune-telling, and the honest version says so. No credible reading tells you what will happen in October.

Where it comes from

The Western lineage traces to Pythagoras, who taught in the sixth century BCE that number underlies music, nature and reality itself. The system practised today, though, was assembled far more recently, largely by three American writers between 1908 and the 1960s: L. Dow Balliett, Julia Seton, and Dr. Juno Jordan, who developed the Life Path, Pinnacles and Challenges still in use. The Chaldean school is older in origin, keeping the letter values 1 through 8 and reading compound numbers as characters in their own right. India carries a parallel tradition, Ank Jyotish, that ties every digit to a planet. China contributes the Lo Shu square.
